Importing and Exporting

Importing and exporting lexicon data allows you to easily share lexical items, themes, and tests with others. Sharing data with classmates and friends means that you can grow your lexicons more quickly or even collaborate in building a single lexicon. Alternatively, your teacher may want to provide the class with a list of lexical items from a particular chapter or unit. After you import the data into your lexicon, your assignment may be to add personal examples to each new lexical item. Using the import/export functionality, there are many possibilities for data sharing.

There are 2 types of export files that you can generate, one containing an entire lexicon and one containing select lexical items. Importing a file containing an entire lexicon will create a new lexicon within your lexicon library. Alternatively, a file containing lexical items is imported into an existing lexicon. Usually, importing an entire lexicon is done once in order to give a student a head start in creating his or her own lexicon. Importing lexical item files might be done on a more regular basis because they are intending to extend or enhance a personal lexicon that already exists.
